Serdang, 14th October – Genectics Society of Malaysia (PGM) in collaboration with Institute of Tropical Agriculture (ITA), Malaysia Agriculture Research and Development Institute (MARDI) and Agro-Biotechnology Institute Malaysia (ABI) had successfully organized the 2^nd International Plant Breeding Seminar 2014 on 14th and 15th October 2014 with the theme ‘Advanced Breeding Strategies in Crop Improvement’ at Agriculture Hall, Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). This international seminar is continuity from ‘First Plant Breeding Seminar’ which was held on 3-5 July 2012 at ABI, Serdang.

 

Opening ceremony was started with opening speech by the Chairman Organizing Commitee, Dr. Abd Rahman Milan and followed by speech by Prof. Dr. Mohamad Osman, President of PGM. Opening ceremony was officiated by YBhg. Prof. Tan Sri Zakri Abdul Hamid, Science Advisor to Honourable Prime Minister of Malaysia. In his opening speech, he expressed that plant breeding is an important field of research for improvement of yield and quality of plant production and had tremendous impacts on economic and national development. He also praised to the researchers which were contributed to the development of superior varieties or clones to uplift national major crops such as rubber, rice, fruits and oil palm. After officiated the ceremony, YBhg. Prof. Tan Sri Zakri Abdul Hamid had launced book published by PGM and also presenting award to Accomplished Plant Breeders.

 

Also in the opening ceremony were YBhg. Prof. Dr. Mohd. Azmi Mohd Lila, UPM Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Development), Prof. Dr. Zulkifli Idrus, Director of ITA, and Dr. Mohd Nizar Basiran, Director of ABI. This seminar had been attended by 159 participants from local and international universities and research institutions including eight invited speakers. Among them are Prof. Dr. Totok Agung Dwi Haryanto from Jenderal Soedirman University, Indonesia, Dr. Peerasak Srinives from Kasetsart University, Thailand; Dr. Bui Chi Buu from Institute of Agricultural Science for Southern Vietnam, Vietnam; and Dr. Sanjeet Kumar from Taiwan.

 

There had been seven (7) sessions throughout the seminar where speakers presented their latest and interesting research finding related to the theme.
