Public Lecture 3/2017: ‘Challenges in Food Sustainability’

September 12, 2017, Serdang - Public Lecture 3/2017 entitled ‘Challenges in Food Sustainability’ has been held on 12th September 2017 at Meeting Room, Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS), Universiti Putra Malaysia. Laboratory of Food Safety and Food Integrity (FOSFI), ITAFoS has invited Assistant Professor Dr. Weerawate Utto of Ubon Ratchathani University, Thailand and Dr. Belal Muhialdin of Universiti Putra Malaysia to present their lectures. Dr. Weerawate presented on the recent and perspective development for extending shelf life of horticultural products by active modified atmosphere packaging incorporating volatile controlled release sachets. The core of his presentation focused on the developed sachets releasing ethanol at controlled periods to extend the shelf life of fresh cut fruits. The technology was hoped to be useful in further sustaining the shelf life of horticultural products. On the other hand, Dr. Belal presented his topic on the food security challenges: the issues of mycotoxin. Mycotoxin is little known among consumers and its toxicity can cause chronic health effects in long-term accumulated consumption. Dr. Belal’s presentation had definitely enlightened the audience on mycotoxin and the severity of its presence.
