GENETICS AND BREEDING

Genetics and Breeding covers the characterisation, conservation and utilisation of genetic resources and genetic improvement of crop plant varieties, and livestock breeds. This area of specialisation focuses on genetic inheritance of qualitative and quantitative characters, quantitative genetics, cytogenetics and the application of molecular markers in selection programmes as well as genetic diversity assessment. It also covers research in quantitative genetics, molecular genetics or a combination of both. Studies on breeding encompass the concepts of relationship, genetic component analyses, estimation of genetic parameters, productivity improvement, and the identification of superior individuals, breeds and varieties, using conventional methods and biotechnological approaches. Studies on genetics cover molecular biology, population genetics as well as recombinant DNA technology.
