Pineapple Producers' Perceptions of Malaysian Good Agricultural Practices (MyGAP) Certification

By: Emmy Farha Alias

MyGAP is a good agricultural practice certification scheme issued by the Department of Agriculture Malaysia. To obtain a MyGAP’s certificate, all farm activities and also documentation of all elements in myGAP will be evaluated and audited by the parties involved. The Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board provides assistance and incentives to pineapple producers who wish to apply for MyGAP certification. According to a pineapple producer in Mukim Ayer Hitam, Muar who had obtained a MyGAP certificate in 2018, he mentioned that among the benefits of MyGAP is that, producers need to keep farm’s records in a systematic manner. This in turn can help producers to estimate the cost of production in the next season and ensure farm management runs smoothly. In addition, the storage and disposal of fertilizers and pesticides according to the rules will helps to improve the worker’s safety and health. However, he believed that producers who had MyGAP certification do not have any advantage in terms of price and revenue if they sold their product in the local market.
