The Tragedy of the Commons in Agriculture

Soil, water and air are three important components in agriculture. These three components have been misused and exploited for short-term gain and profit. This tragedy exacerbates several other problems such as water and sea pollution, air pollution, deforestation, declining biodiversity and many more. Logically, we should invest in common resources (e.g. land, water and air) to restore and improve resources. Restoration and improvement of common resources will enhance ecosystem services for present and future generations. However, there is a price attached to every solution. One way to control this environmental damage is to pay for every service offered by the environment. Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) is the name given to various arrangements where the recipients of ecosystem services reward the land owner who provide services in the form of subsidies or market payments. The payment is one way to appreciate the environment and ensure that these mutual benefits continue.
