Basic Bacteriological Workshop

August 15, 2018, Serdang - A Basic Bacteriological Workshop was organized by the Laboratory of Food Safety and Food Integrity (FOSFI),at Central Laboratory Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS), UPM. The workshop was held from 15th to 16th August and was attended by 8 participants. The workshop was handled by two instructors; Dr. Noor Azira Abd Mutalib (researcher associate of ITAFoS) in collaboration with industry representatives, Ms. Nurizren Nazri (Era Bumi Sains Sdn Bhd).

This two-day workshop was held with the aim of exploring the basic principles related to the analysis of food pathogenic bacteria as it is often used extensively in determining the quality and safety of a food product. The correct pathogenic (bacterial) analysis technique must be used to ensure the reliability of the data obtained. The topics discussed in this workshop are (i) the importance of the pathogens (bacteria), (ii) sampling and preparation of the samples and (iii) pathogen (bacteria) analysis using basic methods such as selective agar, biochemical testing, and microscopic observation.

This workshop has provided opportunities to learn and understand the basic principles and techniques in the pathogen (bacteria) analysis. Furthermore, this would enhance the research and analysis methods used in the field of food security and integrity for officers/ researchers and students from the public and private sectors. Practical activities have helped participants to understand the basic techniques used to analyze the presence of the pathogen (bacteria) in food.
