A Knowledge Transfer Program on Herbal Plant Cultivation

19 November 2025 – a Knowledge Transfer Program on Herbal Plant Cultivation was held at the Kampung Rinching Hulu community centre, which attended by 40 participants from the village and surrounding areas. This workshop was one of the activities under the KTGS@ITAFoS project titled ‘Projek Pemindahan Ilmu Penanaman Tumbuhan Herba Untuk Peningkatan Ekonomi Melalui Herba Di Komuniti Kampung Rinching Hulu’. The Project Leader is Dr. Nur Sumirah Mohd Dom, a Research Officer at the Food Safety and Food Integrity Laboratory, ITAFoS. The objective of this workshop was to transfer knowledge on cultivating herbal plants for health purposes and to provide seedlings and basic materials to enable the community to cultivate these plants effectively.

During the workshop, Dr. Hawa Jaafar, ITAFoS Consulting Fellow, delivered a talk titled “Herbal Plants: Health Benefits and Plant Management Practices”. This was followed by a talk titled “Selection of Herbal Plant Species and Disease Management” presented by Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Siti Izera Ismail, Head of the Climate-Smart Food Crop Production Laboratory, ITAFoS. At the end of the programme, an on-site demonstration on herbal planting techniques was conducted by ITAFoS agricultural officers. Participants were shown how to transfer seedlings into larger pots and the proper care practices needed to ensure healthy plant growth. Each participant received three seedlings (mint, coriander, and turmeric), pots, soil, gardening tools, and gloves for planting and maintaining the herbs at home. Overall, this workshop is expected to equip the community with proper herbal cultivation techniques, enabling them to grow and harvest their own herbs for household use.
