CHICKEN FARMING SKILLS PROGRAM TOWARDS CAREER TRANSITION FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

SERDANG, 28 Ogos -The chicken farming skills program towards career transition towards social needs student is a program under the Community Empowerment Program - Public University (Komuniti@Unimadani) sponsored by the Ministry of Finance and led by Dr Suriya Kumari Ramiah from the Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).  This program aimed to help students with special needs with knowledge and apply chicken farming skills in a real work environment. The target group for this program were students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Dato Abu Bakar Baginda, Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor.

 

A total of 20 students between 16-19 years old were selected to participate in this program. The implementation of the program focuses on theoretical and practical knowledge transfer about broiler chicken management at the Animal Research Center (PPH), ITAFoS. A study visit to PPH by students and teachers from SMK Dato Abu Bakar Baginda teachers was held to explain the biosecurity of the farm, the care and feeding of broiler chickens when the students carry out the chicken farming training at PPH for 35 days which is part of the students' activities students under this program.

 

Dr Suriya's initiative program is expected to provide teaching materials and provide early exposure to students with special needs about the direction and career opportunities that can be pursued in the livestock sector. This program shown evidence of UPM's commitment to society by providing training to students and teachers on the use of animal-based interventions in educating MBPK. This will create a dynamic ecosystem from all sides in empowering the quality of students with special needs’ education and forming potential, independent and productive nation towards improving the national economy.
