Rinching, Selangor, 25 September 2024 - A total of 30 participants consisting of chicken farmers have participated in the Knowledge Transfer Program entitled Disease Management and Village Poultry Farm Biosecurity which has been carried out under the @UniMadani community grant program of the Ministry of Finance Malaysia. It is organized by the Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS), Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Dr. Mamat Hamidi Kamalludin, Head of the Laboratory of Sustainable Animal Production and Biodiversity said that the importance of a program like this for the transfer of knowledge and knowing the latest technology in the management of village chicken diseases and biosecurity control in farms. It is very important to ensure our farming community is always at the forefront of the farming industry. It is hoped that this program will continue to be implemented in the future with more participation from the village chicken farming community in improving the livestock industry in Malaysia, he said.

 Dr. Aida Zakaria, Head of the UniMadani Program said Food security is a national and global concern and a hot topic among Malaysians. Malaysia still shows an unstable food security trend and the current food security policy needs to be paid attention and consider how the import, export and technology systems in rural areas can help. One of them is to reduce food imports on selected products such as chicken. The village chicken industry needs to be given attention in increasing the productivity and profit of the farmers.

The workshop continued with a talk from Dr Suriya Kumari Ramiah, ITAFoS Research Officer entitled Biosecurity and Village Poultry Management followed by a talk from Prof Dr. Jalila Abu, lecturer from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UPM. The participants also participated in the post mortem session of village chickens conducted by Prof. Dr. Jalila Abu to see the health level of the internal organs as normal or otherwise. The sharing of experiences and problems encountered while running a village chicken productions from participants can also increase knowledge to other participants.

The session ended with the handover of a machine to mix the feed, a feed scale, a set of thermometers and hygrometers as well as a closed circuit camera (CCTV) to be installed in the farm. It was delivered by Dr Mamat Hamidi Kamalludin and the Head of Rinching Village, Tuan Haji Samsudin Zainal. Hopefully with this given initiative it can help the farmers in developing their village chicken farming productions.
