18 September 2025 – A total of 40 students accompanied by three teachers from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Mutiara Rini, Johor undertook an educational visit to the Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The programme was organised as part of the school’s co-curricular activities with the objective of providing students with exposure to the field of agriculture, particularly livestock technologies currently being developed in Malaysia.

One of the key destinations of the visit was the Animal Research Centre (PPH), ITAFoS, which plays an important role in supporting the advancement and research of livestock-based agriculture. During the visit, the delegation was briefed by Mr. Eddy Shahriza Jamein, Agricultural Officer at PPH, who shared his expertise and experience on the functions and contributions of the centre towards the development of the livestock field at Universiti Putra Malaysia.

The students and teachers also had the opportunity to tour several livestock research facilities at PPH. Among the highlights was the Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) Research Unit, which attracted keen interest from the students. They were introduced to the potential of BSFL as an alternative protein source in animal feed – an innovative field that has been gaining increasing attention at both national and global levels.

The programme concluded with a group photography session and presentation of souvenirs, officiated by the Head of the Sustainable Animal Production and Biodiversity Laboratory, ITAFoS. The visit not only provided valuable knowledge to the students but also strengthened collaborative ties between the school and the university.
