UPM Researchers Address Challenges for Fresh Fruit Bunch Traders in Perak

Teluk Intan, 26 June 2025 – Researchers from the Laboratory of Agricultural and Food Policy Studies at the Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS) of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) convened with field officers from Solidaridad Network (Malaysia) Berhad at the organization’s Teluk Intan office. This initial meeting was designed to outline collaborative project activities aimed at addressing the challenges faced by fresh fruit bunch (FFB) traders in the region.

During the discussion, participants highlighted several critical issues impacting FFB traders across various districts in Perak. A significant concern mentioned was the fierce competition stemming from independent smallholders selling their fruit directly, which poses challenges to traditional FFB trading. Plans for follow-up field visits were also discussed, with intentions to conduct interviews with selected FFB traders in Hilir Perak.

Representatives from Solidaridad expressed their dedication to facilitating the upcoming fieldwork and enhancing coordination throughout the project's execution. This collaboration is anticipated to yield valuable insights into the palm oil supply chain in Perak.

The outcomes of this partnership are expected to provide researchers with the necessary information to formulate policy recommendations that promote a more sustainable, transparent, and responsible palm oil industry, benefiting both traders and consumers alike.
